Goodnight - from the Lamplighter

£25.00

Dan Price

Goodnight is the central movement of a more substantial work for lower-section brass band entitled The Lamplighter. The complete work provides three settings of poems that offer metaphorical contemplations on our final rite of passage: from life into death.

This selected movement takes inspiration from Alfred Edward Houseman’s poem Parta Quies or Rest is Won written in 1936, the year of the poet’s death. Houseman writes in a reflective vein, a tone the composer tries to emulate here within this setting, drawing inspiration upon the evocative images that are subtly woven into the fabric of this tranquil setting.

The work was commissioned by Graham Helm for the 2nd Rossendale Scout Band, and premiered at a charity concert at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester in 2019, raising more than £20,000 for the East Lancashire Hospice.
