Commissioned in 2014 by Soprano Cornet virtuoso Steve Stewart, Concerto for Soprano Cornet, was written specifically to showcase the skills of this great performer alongside the extended range of the Stomvi four-valved instrument. The work takes inspiration from the composers of the late-romantic period and, similar to Alexander Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto, was originally conceived as a continuous movement with three clear sections – Intrada, Poem and Scherzo.
The Scherzo, published independently here, is written with the conventional three-valved instrument in mind and offers a real tour-de-force for both soloist and ensemble. The music takes inspiration specifically from the music of Rachmaninov and Stravinsky, composers both Steve and Dan share a love of. As a result, the music has a distinct Russian ‘flair’ to it.
